Judy Mason Watercolor Painter

Artist Statement

Painting has always been a joy, a chance to escape and produce something beautiful. I chose watercolor because of the freshness and transparency of the colors.

However, turning a blank sheet of white paper into a painting is anxiety provoking. So, I start with a photo that emotionally appeals to me and I sketch a simplified version of the subject. Then I add the water and the paint and watch what happens as they mix in exciting and surprising ways.

A moment will occur sometimes when something magical happens and all my years of experience come rushing forward and allow me to let go of control. I work very quickly — barely aware of what is happening. When finished, I sit back and am amazed; and I love what I just created.

In my earlier paintings I typically tried to keep the paint under control. In my later paintings, I am learning how to paint more loosely and more spontaneously, which pushes me out of my comfort zone. This process of painting with watercolors continues to intrigue me.

Those who view my work comment on how lovely they are. I hope you will enjoy them as well.
